Humans and dolphins floating
In 1976 Michaels said, "While others are attempting to break the language barrier of Dolphinese by studying the dolphins in holding tanks, our goal will be to exchange the information, energy, and mythologies of our cultures."

What it boiled down to for me was this: Doug became my compass. Whenever I was faced with a design issue, my first question was always "What Would Doug Do?" Sometimes the answer would scare me so I would change the question to "If I did it like this, What Would Doug Think?" And so I'd plunge headlong into some renovation project. I didn't often have the chance to have him look at my project first, but he was always on my shoulder trying his hardest to guide me.

"What Would Doug Think?" was also a question Joe and I asked ourselves frequently as we read the newspapers and watched the news. Fortunately, it wouldn't be long before the question was answered via cyberspace or the USPS (what will they do without him?). What a thinker he was. And he was just so much fun. I will miss him and he will always be my compass.

Dear all,

So many of you are making a long trip here and the Michels family thanks you for it. It means a great deal to them. If you need travel info or directions, I'll be happy to help or at least get you pointed in the right direction. Please feel free to call or E-mail.

Are there any more of you that may be coming? Just trying to get a general idea of how many. If you decide you can come at the last minute, that will be wonderful, just come on, no need to let me know.

Thanks,
Dabney

Friends,

Caroline Michels said the other day that she is so moved by these wonderful tributes and that they all capture Doug so well. Would someone have the time to put them together in a book form to be given to the Michels family? It is my hope that we could give it to them at the memorial birthday celebration, but time being what it is, we'll see if that is practical.

Please let me know if you can help. Thanks you all so much. All of this wonderful communication has really helped the Michels family.
