From Glenn Garrison..so you were in Eden. Where it all began. In Australia. It figures... To all of your extended family - I always felt that I was the bridge to the normal for Doug and that he was the bridge to the visionary for me. Alex, Noah, and I are profoundly sad to know that he is gone, but we are profoundly glad to have known and spent time with him. I met Doug about 20 years ago when I was asked to meet with him at Johnson/Burgee. I had recently read an article about Ant Farm, so I recognized the name and assumed that he wanted a tour of the office. But no, he was in a double-breasted, pinstripe suit - a not fully developed corporate persona - hoping to get a job . So we hired him. We worked together on PPG Place in Pittsburgh, with me serving as his teacher/mentor. Over time, he became my teacher, and I was in awe and wonder about his marvelous creations. We, too, have all of the letters with drawings and messages that he sent to us (there should be a gathering and showing of these works). At one point he told Alex that we had the only copy of the Bluestar script - we made a second copy. Alex, Noah, and I swam with dolphins in Florida at Doug's urging. In his application to Wesleyan, Noah tore up an essay that he had planned to write, and quickly wrote one about Doug, which Alex and I think gave him an edge in getting accepted. Later, Noah lived in Sydney for a year after studying at UNSW, and when Alex and I visited, we connected with Doug's feel for the place. I visited Doug several times when he lived in DC - once with Alex and once with Noah - enjoying his neighborhood places and his apartment with the TV in the stove (or am I misremembering?). And, I was at the Harvard GSD when Doug helped organize the Loeb Reunion in 1986 - he told me that he wanted Ross Perot to be the speaker, but was overruled. We will miss his missives and his love for all of life's possibilities - especially his love and fascination about dolphins everywhere: Australia, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, downtown Washington D.C., and of course, in outer space. We would have liked more time with him. He will always be a part of our family. See you in the future, Doug. Love, Glenn, Alex, and Noah P.S. It is moving and wonderful to receive copies of the e-mail from all of Doug's friends. It is surprising to find out about all of his areas of work and how much he touched all of us - but it makes sense. If you are in New York, please call us so we can compare notes and make a toast to Doug. Our e-mail address is given above. Thanks, Glenn |
