From Richard GluckmanAll these e-mails are sad and funny and lovely tributes to a man I hardly knew. They confirm a feeling I’ve had over the past 5 months that doug michaels makes the recipient of one of his e-mails, post cards, or newspaper clippings feel smarter, brighter, and generally more optimistic about everything. He makes one feel like a co-conspirator even though he is a few light years ahead of us. In about 1970, doug michaels and doug hurr and one other, I think, rolled on to theSyracuseuniversity campus in the media van, towing a compressor. They conned the dean out of a few hundred dollars, gave a lecture, built an inflatable, and blew out a few days later. My roommate and I were able to provide them with a place to shower and hang. Those couple of days, his personality, hiswork, his energy probably had as much affect on me as any single event in my academic career. I still tell students about the mies van der rohe lecture that got him fired from somewhere in texas. 5 months ago I was thrilled to hear he was still walking the earth and
reconnected via e-mail and post and was (am) looking forward with eager
anticipation to theBerkeleyshow in 04. Richard gluckman |
