From Tom ShannonHello Dougsters, It's so good to read all of these tales of Doug. I got a letter from Eden, too. Can you believe how many letters Doug writes! The envelope featured Queen Elizabeth's sceptre, rubberstamps... inside a color "cosmic weather" page torn from a newspaper with annotations & Eden circled on the map, a killer whale refrigerator magnet, a postcard of a whale skeleton called "Old Tom", and a note, "Old Tom, G'Day from Eden..Brains .in .the. Waves! Happy Future, Old Doug" . Doug first walked up to me at a cocktail party overlooking the Guggenheim
in 1978 and introduced himself and his then partner Alex Morphett. Doug
the enchanter with those bluestar eyes. After about ten minutes of telling
each other what we were dreaming about we decided to collaborate on making
a 3D Hollywood feature. In a year we wrote a screenplay, drew a color
storyboard, a complete set of architectural prints for all the rocketships,
space cities, 3D planets, moved to LA I'd never known anyone with Doug's electricity. A combination of James Bond-James Dean-scholar-visionary architect-wild artist-combined somehow in a debonair sharp-witted generous spirit which when focused on you could make things positively trippy. Doug, you were one rare and amazing trans human. I miss you already, pal. Tom |
